SPELLING, WITH A CLOCK

A spelling and vocabulary word game for the classroom.

Konsa asks students to build the highest-scoring word they can from eight letter cards, against a 30-second clock that starts when the first word is locked in, checked against a real English word list. Tables seat up to six, so a class splits into small groups, each with its own link. No student accounts.

01

Split into tables.

A student, or you, starts a table and shares its six-character code. Up to six per table; start as many tables as you need.

02

Build a word.

Any letters are allowed, and duplicate cards need duplicate letters. Only the eight cards score: 5, 4, 3 or 2 points by column, plus a bonus on rare letters such as J, Q, X and Z.

03

Check and reveal.

Every word is checked against the word list before it counts, and no exact word repeats in a game. Words are revealed together at the end of each round, a natural moment to talk about them.

Questions

Which dictionary does Konsa use?

The union of a common-English list and Collins Scrabble Words 2021, which admits many short and unusual words. The list isn’t curated for classrooms, and questions about names or word variations are an honor-system matter.

Do students need accounts or email?

No. Each student types a name at the table. Accounts are optional and only add Daily Duel history and friends.

How long is a game?

Seven rounds, about 20 minutes. For a shorter warm-up, the Daily Duel is three boards at 30 seconds each, the same boards for everyone that day.

What devices work?

Any modern browser on laptops, tablets and phones. Nothing to install.

Twenty minutes of words.

Six students, eight cards, one clock. The reveal at the end of each round shows every word at once, which is where the conversation about spelling and meaning starts.
